Spanish Moss -- Bloomin' Tuesday

Tillandsia usneoides, Spanish Moss, Florida Moss, Long Moss, Graybeard is not related to either mosses or lichens. It is of the Bromeliad Family and yes it does flower as seen below.Epiphtic plants grow on another plant, they do not rely on the host plant for nutrients, epiphytes make their own food. It was harvested for years as stuffing for automobile seats, furniture and mattresses. Some songbirds use the plant as building materials. Warblers and Bats are fond of it.
It's time for Bloomin' Tuesday over at http://msgreenthumbjean.blogspot.com
I borrowed some myself :)

Happy May!

This is so cute. When we went to St. Augustine on a tour they shared how it was itchy and had ticks. Is that true? I remember as a little girl always bringing some back from Florida. Thank you for your sweet comment about my "sweet teen"!

I love, love, love your mossy gardener. She is adorable! I've never heard Spanish moss referred to as greybeard...but it's very appropriate. Spanish moss is one of my favorites.

Well I am glad I had already had my morning coffee when I read this post, because otherwise I'd have had coffee all over the monitor -- I burst out laughing at the last picture. It's brilliant!

PS Tell Mrs Doris that I want to LIVE in her garden!

And I'm envious you saw the Royal Wedding. I was away, no TV, and my husband forgot to DVR it!

Val, I don't know about ticks, I do know for SURE that redbugs live in the moss. Some reptiles also like to burrow in it...yikes!

The things I learn from other bloggers. I've never seen Spanish moss up close and personal before and would never have known it blooms. Love your Moss Person and her little saying. My thoughts exactly!

Spanish moss has so many decorative uses. Your garden person is fantastic.

I think a live oak tree draped in Spanish moss best represents the Coastal South, such a romantic look.
