Cosmos In The Shade?

The last week or so my husband and I have been seeing this yellow area in our backwoods. See it in the middle just left of a tree? Yesterday we finally had some time to walk around the gardens and yard. Upon closer inspection we found the yellow area to be Cosmos.

The Cosmos seeds that I received from Catherine over at http://agardenerinprogress.blogspot.com/ and Ms. Frances over at http://fairegarden.wordpress.com (some were yellow and some were orange) germinated and bloomed for months in the garden. When the seed heads starting drying I collected the seed, (even gave some away in the seed packets I made for my daughter's wedding) to save for next year. The flower stalks were either pulled up or cut to ground level. I now have another showing of Cosmos where they were originally planted, some seeds drifted a little ways from the original area. BUT this area is not close to the garden, it get's filtered sun and it's feet are in moist soil by somewhat of a creek...hmmm
If only I could find different colored Cosmos that grow like these. I have grown the standard pink and white ones, they performed nothing like these. I will be collecting more seeds if anyone is interested...

What are your experiences with Cosmos? I'd love to know.

Today I am Thankful for little surprises like this..

Cosmos in the shade? Interesting! We had such an unusual summer, my cosmos didn't even show up!

Those are pretty. Mine grew really tall and had few blooms.

Looks like the one I had growing which was orange. It's botanical is Cosmos sulphureus(I believe). My orange one grew in partial sun.

Isn't it wonderful the way plants show up in unexpected places? We have had quite a few 'volunteers' appear, but no Cosmos.

A gift to you from God for your great wedding celebration.

What a cool surprise! I have had no luck getting cosmos to do well here in my current garden. But...up in Atlanta, I had pinks and whites that would reseed all over the garden every year...in just the right places. Loved it then, but I've given up on it these days.

Those are Bidens, a native wildflower. :) Personally my very favorite of all time. Spectacular en masse and very easy to grow.

Hi Darla, I don't have Cosmos here --but I've seen several blogs recently where people are posting it --and talking about it blooming this time of year... Yours are so pretty, even if they are blooming outside of your yard. ... Hope you can get more colors...

Hugs,
Betsy

What nice volunteers those little flowers are! Definitely keep the seeds. The only time I tried cosmos they turned into giant stalks and never bloomed. Yours look so innocent and tame.

Neat Darla. I love the volunteers that the birds scatter. I've had 3 different groups of volunteer plants in spots where there is no garden. Love it. Cosmos was not my friend this year. They got too leggy with no blooms so I pulled them out.

They look great in the woods.

I haven't had much luck with them either but keep trying. Sounds like they made their ideal spot. :)

I haven't grown this cosmos but I grow the pink [of course] varieties to great effect. Yours look nice out in the woods. Nice job.

Sweet yellow flowers. My only experience with cosmos is Ulam Raja which has been regularly featured in my blog.

Our neighbors across the street grew cosmos this year. They're SO beautiful!

Those are so pretty! What a gorgeous wildflower, I remember seeing them on Sweetbay's blog.

Wow, cosmos in the shade, how neat is that? I love the plants that bless us with their presence and are undemanding--wait, that's usually weeds, isn't it? But these are truly gorgeous flowers!

I've never seen yellow Cosmos before! Beautiful! I love growing the Cosmos sulphureus, but they're shades of orange - no yellow. :-( If you still have some extra seed, I'd love to grow some. Let's see what we can trade!

No experience what-so-ever.
But....ummm... you can add some of those seeds to the loofah seed package you are sending me. tee hee

Oh, I see some of those blooms are bidens, and not cosmos. I've seen Sweet Bay's, too. They sure are cheerful!

The yellow and orange smaller blooming cosmos get diseased in my garden. The larger ones take a long time to bloom, and sometimes get leggy. Still, I try a few most years.
