What's Happening To Our Society?

I am not posting for Fertilizer Friday today. Sorry Tootsie, if you would like to see who still has plants to fertilizer this 6th day of November, 2009 go to http://tootsietime.blogspot.com

I am just sick to my stomach this morning with all of the strange evil things happening around us. This week we have had 5 incidents (in our town) of strangers trying to pick children up while walking to and from school or to and from their bus stops. What happened to letting our children play freely in our neighborhoods and or walk to and from school? When my two older children were younger, I used to love to hear the front/ back doors slam shut as they were in such a hurry to go outside and play. Now, with the three younger children, if I hear the door open and close, I'm on their heel strings wanting to know where they are going and what they will be doing..( in our own yard for crying out loud). Not to mention we feel as though we have to keep our doors locked at all times..sigh I so miss the days when the adults around our children would look out for them, even scold them if necessary and then call their parents. I read so many of your blogs and the joy you have in your grandchildren...I too, would love to spoil a grandchild...wonder what kind of a world is ahead for them?

THEN I see the horrific events that unfolded at Ft. Hood....our soldiers aren't even safe in the safest conditions for them.....I truly believe Satan and his Demons are running wild...devouring whomever they can...and taking the innocent with them.
Stand....Pray....Don't lose faith or operate in fear...two of Satan's biggest tools. Stand .... Pray!

May you have a Blessed weekend and walk in the favor of the Lord..

Hi Darla, It seems as we get older, things go from bad to worse these days.
I remember when I was a kid, no one locked their doors, ev1 was friendly and helpful.

The world it seems is getting smaller to.

We have to enjoy every minute we can
these days.

Nature will right itself sooner or later.

Just as I type this your name popped up, Hi, lol.

See there are good things happening too.
Hope you have a happy weekend and look after that gold shield.lol.

Great post Darla. What a terrible tragedy at Fort Hood - just senseless. What is wrong with people these days. The missing 8 month old recently found yesteday with at the baby sitters home. The mother gave her away. Why? It seems that people have stripped themselves of any morals or feelings for other people. I used to forget to lock the door but I didn't fret over it. People cared more then about others.

Meems said...

Very different world we live in than when you and I were growing up. It's a self-centered, 'ME FIRST' kind of mind-set in so many ways. If we only cared about others more ...in general, we'd be looking out for each other more.

We live on a very quiet, private street but still keep the doors lock-ed. We didn't used to but now, no question. Like you don't let your children out of your sight ... I don't let my grandkids out of my sight.

I DO wish news channels weren't on 24/7... they almost glorify the evil happenings with their droning on and on about it non-stop.

I hope you have a great weekend too... enjoy this weather and breathe in the blessings of your family.

When I think of the freedom I had as a kid fifty years ago out playing around all day and walking the roads and today they are not safe in their own yards or homes it just makes me sick.
Evil abounds on all sides now and the hardness of peoples hearts and conscious just leaves me shaking my head. What a selfish world it has become.

Have a wonderful weekend Darla with the family.

I know what you mean Darla, it makes me sick. I'm originally from Jacksonville Beach and that little girl over there who was abducted and killed while she walked home from school a couple of weeks ago has also been on my mind. They haven't caught who did it and who's to say that person hasn't moved on to Tallahassee? I have been talking to my grandson every morning when I drop him off for school about strangers. It's so scary. I am also just heartsick about the shootings at Ft. Hood. I have some friends who used to be stationed there.

I don't let my girl out of my sight! Way too many bad things going on around us.

Sometimes the harshness of the world seems to rush in on us and Meems' point about the news is, I think, a good one. Although the things you mention here are all real and terrible (and what happened at Ft Hood is an exceptional event which will have to be understood, in time and within its own context) in this country (England) the fear of abductions etc. far outstrips how often such events occur and the curbing of young people's freedom in consequence is very sad.

Best wishes in trying times . . . and . . . let us put our trust in goodness. Hard to do . . . but I think it is almost a duty.

The world is definitely a scary and changing place. It seems we have to guard all we do now a days.

Darla - did you see what happened just now in Orlando?

Another mass shooting - looks like 2 dead and 17 more shot.

I don't even know what to say about it...you know? What can you say? it's just so sick and so sad and so tragic and so...

So sad it makes you just want to shout.( James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you doubleminded.) Our pastor teacher had a military background told us years ago.The world had reached the top and was now on a decline and we will see things never imagine in our life time.

I agree with all of you, things are getting worse every day. Like Darla said, the Devil is alive and well and raging through the world, seeking whom he may devour. I think this is fulfillment of the Scriptures. We need to brace ourselves for times worse than these. But how? I think this scripture is the key: " If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)
We recently attended a revival and the visiting preacher gave us three very good sermons on this one sentence. If all of us who call ourselves Christian would do this, throughout the world, we would see what God can do.

Things have definatley changed. We live in a small town and still for the most part leave our doors unlocked...but it is getting less frequent. Seems we have to be on gaurd 24/7. You see a stranger and your afraid to smile at them, if they smile you get scared. The world has tilted off base.
We have to look for good things or we will live in fear. We teach our children not to talk to strangers, then when a stragner says "hi" to them, the child dosen't respond and the stranger says "what a brat". Better to be a brat than to be a victim. Not only stragers but people you know you have to be leary of. Keep the faith!

I agree, very sad. I'm the same with my oldest when she's in our fenced backyard I still worry about her.
We used to roam the neighborhood with our friends and just return at dinner.
Very sad about Fort Hood too.

Great posting Darla..
I am sure many many people will read this and agree... all I can add is you must look for the good things in life, report them and make sure that good news is mentioned and seen to be happening. Remember when ever you can smile and let others smile back and spread the happiness.

Oh Darla----you are SO right. Our country has changed so much... It just makes me so sad... I think of the 'olden days' when parents worked hard for their families and caring for others. These days it's all about "Keeping up with the Jones's". People are all into themselves and their greediness and selfishness and apathy. Life is all about what someone can do for 'ME'!!!! It's a ME-ME-ME world. Life didn't used to be that way.

I don't know the answer --other than prayer and involvement. We citizens need to take back our country.. Patriotism needs to return--as much as religion. It just seems that the USA is becoming more and more secular and less and less Patriotic.

OH--this subject is just so upsetting to me --and I truly feel helpless. I try to keep my blogs positive --but sometimes it is just so darn hard.

It's easy for me to say: "Ignore what is going on around me and just go outside and smell the roses".... BUT--I don't think that God wants us to ignore what is happening all around us. SO--what do we do???? Pray-Pray-Pray for guidance and good leadership.

Darla, I agree with you about Satan being active in the world. I am thankful to be a Christian and know that whatever happens to those who love Him, He will cause good to come from it. Still, it hurts to see people hurting others.

There are a number of students at the school I work at who get into fights. A student I work with in the swimming pool had his communication ipod dealy stolen by a student/s from another class who were watching the others who chose to swim with us a couple weeks ago. It's been narrowed down to a couple, but no one is saying if they saw anything.

Also, this thing among young people who feel like they can do bad things to "snitchers" angers me. They actually feel that a person who tells on someone who commits a crime against someone is doing something worse than the offender. I hate that!

Well, let's pray, and enjoy our weekends. I am praying for the service people of our country.

This is just so sad to hear. We have had a lot of rotten things around here too.
I wish the world was a much kinder place. I worry about the kids in my own yard too...and I have begun to drive my gang to and from school...as I am fearful for their safety a block from home!
I say this to myself each morning:
Happiness keeps You Sweet,
Trials keep You Strong,
Sorrows keep You Human,
Failures keeps You Humble,
Success keeps You Glowing
'Worry looks around, sorry looks back, Faith looks up.

have a great weekend girl.

Well stated. Our biggest and most powerful tool is prayer and I have spent some extra time doing that on behalf of those who have suffered so much in the past couple of days.

What a beautiful blog. I, too, love flowers. And yours are beautiful. Thanks for visiting me. It is so sad the world is now so evil. Bless you

I came to see your blog and respond to your kind comment and found a lovely blog and you captured my compassion with your last post. I know it is so hard sometimes when we are surrounded by so much darkness but that is all the more reason to release the light of the Lord. Light shines all the more in darkness. We do make a difference even though sometimes it doesn't feel so. Somehow in my heart I know you are one of those women who when you wake up the enemy is saying "oh man! she is up again"
Blessings to you

Hi Darla, And the shooter was a psychiatrist. Talk about a twisted system. To tell you the truth my young adult kids are really wondering whether they want to bring kids into a world like this. So many parents are naive about what it takes to raise a child in a healthy environment. To be able to count the cost ahead of time is a good thing--don't have kids if you're not willing to sacrifice and go the distance, is what I tell them.

Things are confusing and sad but there is far more good going on than bad. We just don't hear about it because the good deeds are rarely ostentatious. We shouldn't be naive but I don't think we should let this kind of crap kill our joy. [I know I'm preaching to the choir here. You seem like a very positive person.]

Darla, this is a great (and most needed) post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
I wish I had some answers. It seems to me that we as a society have lost all sense of consideration for others. We've also lost all sense of right and wrong. It's sad.
