Cottage Flora Thursday and FF

So far so good with the Lupine seed, thanks Grace. This plant is very important to me, not only because of where the seeds came from..also because I spoke to a MG at the local nursery here and was told that Lupine would germinate in our zone although it would not grow and definitely would not bloom. Looks like it might bloom to me! Should I take a photo to the nursery, give them a call or invite them over to see it? :)

White Carnations--Dianthus

Celosia volunteering to grow in a row at the edge of the driveway...gotta be moved or tossed.

Echinacea purpurea--Eastern Purple coneflower with Salvia farinacea 'Blue Bedder' Sage or Mealycup Sage

Liatris spicata--Gayfeather, Blazing Star or Button Snakeroot gets better every year.

I have it here and there throughout the gardens.Tall Phlox- Nicky

Althea--Rose of Sharon , double....don't know why I didn't show my single.

Monardo didyma, Bee Balm--Jacob Kline

Linking up with http://fishtailcottage.blogspot.com/ and FF for tomorrow at http://tootsietime.blogspot.com/ .

Do have a safe and happy weekend!

I would take a picture over to the nursery and tell them it sure looks happy in your garden. LOL
I have always loved the Rose of Sharon. I never knew there was a double Rose of Sharon.

I would take a picture too, although maybe they wouldn't believe it unless they saw it with their own eyes.

I love all the pretties growing in your gardens.

Have a great weekend ~ FlowerLady

Lupines are one of those flowers that are gorgeous but are hard to grow in the South - terrific job - you've probably hit the perfect micro climate for it! Bravo!
You have some of my favorite cottage garden flowers!
Hope you have a blessed day,
Kathy

We had such storms here last night I don't know what survived in my yard but did not have a lot of pretties like you.
A very Happy Birthday wish to your hubby. That is a great one to celebrate. lol

Well the Lupine looks like it is happy in your garden to me.
The tiny Bluebonnets from the seeds you gave me can only hope they grow that big this summer in our crazy weather.Maybe I am watching then too closely. LOL!
The Gayfeather bulbs you gave me did not bloom last year but they are growing very well this spring and I have my fingers crossed girl. LOL!

Hi Darla - Your flower blooms are looking spectacular! Love them especially the echinacea. Do you ever dry them out and use them as tea? I've heard you can do that with echinacea plants, but not sure if it's actually safe.

Happy Cottage flora Thursday!
-Marie

Take a photo over to the nursery and tell them, nanny, nanny, nah... Just kidding. Maybe. :) I couldn't keep my Lupines alive and they all died over the winter. Frustrating. I love yours though, all that lush foliage and the nice fat bloom spike. So I'll just enjoy them vicariously. ... Just my two bits here but I think you should leave the celosia. Let them bloom in a row. How cool would that be?

Alison said...

Wow! You have Rose of Sharon blooming already?! Here it has barely even leafed out yet. That Lupine is going to be beautiful!

George said...

I would definitely let the MG know about your Lupine. A picture and an invite may show him/her a thing or two.
I also was surprised to learn about a double Rose of Sharon. Yours is very beautiful.

Yes---by all means, take a picture and take it to the nursery where you were told that.... The Lupine is going to be gorgeous once it blooms. Please show it to us again...

Don't think I have ever seen tall Phlox before.. Very pretty.

AND--I love the Rose of Sharon. Gorgeous.

You must have that special touch,to get the Lupine to grow for you and bloom. In my cooler climate, they do very well and almost become invasive, but in a good way.

Oh, Darla, I am so jealous! I don't have any luck with lupins. This year, at last, one of them survived the wet and cold winter. And what do you think happened? A deer came and ate it up!
But you, you take that photo and bring it to that nursery!

Janet, The Queen of Seaford said...

Hi Darla, thanks so much for stopping by my blog.
Funny you should mention the Lupines-- saw some this weekend on our trip north and commented to my husband that I would like to grow them-- but didn't think they would grow well in our 7b garden. I think I will rethink that as a possibility.
Happy birthday to your husband...50th-- wooo whooo

Happy B-day to your husband. It's fun to visit your gardens, makes me excited for what is hopefully going to bloom in my garden :) I really like the photo with the coneflowers and salvia. Very pretty!

Bonnie K said...

I love the coneflower/salvia combination! Beautiful flowers. Good job on the bloomin lupin! I'm sure it is the same as the feeling I get when I actually get a zone 5 rose to make it through our zone 3 winter:)

Catherine@AGardenerinProgress said...

If anyone could prove that MG wrong it's you :) My lupine is at about the same place. They smell really good and if I dead head them I usually get more flowers. I love seeing what's blooming in your garden since I won't see most of those for another month or two.

Meems said...

Hey Darla,
I always love seeing the liatris blooming roadside in North Florida... I tried them here but something went wrong. Never did bloom... I need to try again. Also the coneflower don't do great here... yours are really pretty with the sage.

Here's a link to Rick Brown's blog (Florida Friendly Plants) where he photographed lupine growing in a field down here. Thought you might like to see it for verification. http://floridafriendlyplants.com/Blog/post/2011/03/05/Lupines-in-Florida-Yes-Indeed.aspx

I absolutely adore Lupins! Mine are not quite as advanced as yours, but I think they'll prove to be beautiful this year!

Hi Darla: Lovely blooms.

You asked me on Fertilizer Friday the name of the plant I had featured in the upper left corner of my picture. It's called Cushion Spurge (Euphorbia); very easy to grow, and I love its day-glow colors.

A good location would make all the difference in landscaping your front yard flower beds. Since flowers would naturally draw the attention of most people, it is only logical to set the flower beds as the focal point of the landscape.
