Birds...?
Carolina Chickadee with an itch. Can you tell what type of Woodpecker this is?
Back shot.
I need this one's name too..
Isn't he pretty?
The two year old that died from our Church, I was told last night it was from SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Isn't two kind of old for that? I'm sure I'll here more later.
Today I am thankful for the quietness in my house.
SIDS that is so terrible. I have never heard of SIDS affecting children that age. I am so sad for the family - prayers are going up. I see you are enjoying that nice camera you received. Great photos of the birds. I love goldfinches and woodpeckers.
I'm so sorry about the little two yr old. I just can't imagine the grief of the family. I've not heard of a two year having this happen. I thought it was much younger.
Your photos are looking especially pretty. I looked back at the icicle photos and that is dramatic. Really like your contest entry.
And your daughter's rainforest room is looking good! The ivy on her door is perfect I think. Enjoyed seeing her frogs.
It was good to see you today. And before I left--I sprayed squirrel repellant on all your feeders ;)
Hi Darla, your daughters bathroom is so lovely you are making a grand job of it. We have such boring birds in our garden here compared to yours, not that I am complaining as it's lovely just to see any kind of bird, but more colourful would be nice !!
I was very sad to hear about the little 2 year old, that's my grandsons age and it doesn't bear thinking about. God bless that family x
A Red Bellied Woodpecker and the Gold finch has its winter coat which is more gray. In the summer they are bright yellow and so pretty. We have so many of them up here at the feeders now with the snow cover. Wonderful pictures Darla. How awful for the family. I have not heard of SIDs in older children either. It is usually babies. Strange.
Darla, beautiful bird photos and how fun that you are learning to id all your feathered friends. Lois id'd them both correctly in the first comment but I just want to tell you about this website for the future. It is a wonderful way to id birds!
Yes, you have a beautiful Red-bellied Woodpecker, Darla. At our house, his name is Pete and his beautiful wife (with less red on her head) is named Petunia.
AND-you have a beautiful male Goldfinch. He will turn BRIGHT yellow in spring..
So sorry to hear about that child's death.. Yes---age 2 is a little old for SIDS I think. What a tragedy.
I think the suggestions of others is right, Red-bellied woodpecker and Goldfinch. We have the Goldfinch here although not as many now as last year. In spring their feathers are brilliant yellow wiht black wing markings...very beautiful!
Hi Darla~~ Two years old does indeed seem old for SIDS. I can't imagine the anguish the parents are experiencing. Some really captivating photos of your birds. I'm not smart enough to ID them but I am smart enough to enjoy them. :) I hope your weather is back to friendly once again and that there were minimal losses.
I'm glad you got your birds identified. We have some red bellied woodpeckers here in Nebraska.
I've never heard of a two year old dying from sids, either. That would be so hard to deal with as a parent. One would almost want for it to have been something else that caused the death.
Beautiful flowers and bird photos on your site this week. What terrible news about the SIDS tragedy. Age two does seem awfully old for SIDS to strike. Deaths from metabolic disorders such as glycogen storage disease or fatty acid oxidation disorders often mimic SIDS. I trust the child was fully worked up for these, not all of which are on the expanded newborn screening test. How awful to lose a child.
I had to go back after reading comments - I skimmed the text I admit. Very sad indeed. I would have had an older brother if he hadn't died of what we call SIDS. The family "secrets" we learn as we get older. Life can be so sad. And so beautiful. The older I get the more I realize what a mixed bag it is. Still, one must not forget that joy and beauty and life's delights are just as real, and not to be lost out on. My heart goes out to the family of the little child.
Looks like everyone has already told you what the birds are. And yes they are pretty! Loving your new camera pics! I haven't heard of SIDS at that age either. Still praying for that family!

That last bird is a goldfinch in winter plumage. I think that is a red bellied woodpecker in the other pictures, but it's hard to tell.

I'm pretty sure you've captured a Red-Bellied Woodpecker as well as a Goldfinch. We have both at our feeders.
We haven't seen many Goldfinches around the last couple of years, they are so pretty!
2 does seem old for SIDS, how sad for the family.
I love that last shot of the goldfinch!
oh so sad...wow 2 does seem old for that...pretty birds...just started raining here in Texas..

Prayers for the family who lost a child!
My zoom lens finally came in! So hopefully this weekend I can get some good shots!
That is so terrible about that child! I will keep the family in my prayers. I am with Becca...I have never heard of SIDS with a child of that age

I love quiet times too. I have never heard of sids affecting a child that age either. That is so pitiful. I will pray for them. Keep us updated.
so sad darla about the little girls who passed away...i will lift her family up in prayer.
you got your id's already on your birds...glad you are having some great bird visitors.
your daughter loves frogs and you have made her a wonderful place to celebrate what she love. how fun.
hope you are having happy january days.
Darla: Neat birds in your area. It is funny how some birds become more colorful in winter while others dull their coats.
