Surprises and a Chance for SNOW!

Walking around the yard yesterday found some surprises...
First of 30..
Closing in the evening.
All you birders help us with this ID. Do you think this is a Rusty Blackbird? Look at that yellow eye!
Back view.
We have Brown-headed Cowbirds by the hundreds every afternoon, male and female.
Don't forget the Backyard Bird Count this weekend. For more info click the banner on the right of my blog.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snow has been predicted for our area (Tallahassee, Florida) tomorrow and Saturday..this morning the weather man had the snow accumulation map up for our area---what in the world? Just the thought of conditions being right for snow around here has this household giddy! (I know the most of you have had way too much snow this winter)
This is what our sky looked like yesterday afternoon...no, the camera was not out of focus. I don't recall ever seeing a blurry sky before. My husband said it looks like a 3-D movie without the glasses..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Today I am Thankful for the little surprises in life!

What is the pink flower in the first pic Darla? Whatever it is, it's very cheery.

Darla said...

Dani: the names of the flowers are on the photos..it is Creeping Phlox.

Oh my gosh Darla, snow? Hope you don't get a lot and hope your lovely bloomers survive. We lost a lot of leaves from things that last bout of cold temps we had. It only got down to 41 here this morning, and with wind chill it felt like 38.

Keep warm.

Hey Darla, I love your "circle" header pic. No wonder you won.

We too are suppose to get snow starting this afternoon and tomorrow. They have already put up a winter storm watch. This really has been a cold winter.

Hope you have a good day.

Yep. They're calling for snow for us on Saturday. If it hits you first, we'll certainly get some. When will this end?

Darla,

I hope you get the snow you wish for! I'm very over the white stuff for this year. I wish our normal temperatures would return. Mid 40's sounds balmy right now!

This has been an unbelievable winter all across the country. Snow in Florida, yet none in BC for the Olympics. Hope it doesn't do a lot of damage to your gardens.

I can just imagine how excited you are! I sure hope you get your snow! Jean

I hate the thought of what snow could mean for the beautiful blooms you already have. But just the thought of snow in Tallahassee is mind-boggling.

I'm thrilled you found some blooms. Looks like a little sun shining on the flowers too. Weird looking sky photo. It does look 3-D.

Hope you get enough snow for the kids to make a snowman.

I'm expecting some up my way. I am in north Mobile. Weather man says maybe 1-3 inches where I live.

Brr...I hope you don't get too much snow! Loved seeing the crocus blooms, they're such a sweet little flower.
Keep warm!

Darla I love your header!!! It's wonderful that you still have flowers!! I guess it would be exciting to get snow where you live but hope it doesn't kill your flowers! We have a chance of snow on Friday, but I'll have to see it to believe it!

Phlox is surely a sign of spring! Yep, calling for a dusting of snow our way as well. I am not holding my breath for it as it is so rare in our neck of the woods but then again, the weather has been so not normal this winter.

My vote would go for a Rusty Blackbird but the Brewers Blackbird is so similar. Look them both up in a book and then examine them really closely with binoculars. I’ve only seen a few of the Brown-headed Cowbirds but the Red-winged Blackbirds have been stopping by in a big flock recently…

I am grateful for even the possibility for snow tomorrow! It brings such excitement…

You are a winner always. Hope you get a snow flurry or two.

That could be a Rusty Blackbird, but I'm not sure. I saw a robin yesterday morning in my front yard! He was too quick for me to get a picture. My grandson and I saw some bluebirds in the trees behind my daughter's house last Friday afternoon. I told them they needed to put up a nest box, but I don't know if they will.

Hi Darla, Hope you do get a little snow--and snow won't hurt your flowers. FROST will but not snow. They are saying that this next system will give snow to the south--so we shall see!!!!

Love your flowers... Our Candy Tuft is still as dead as six door nails... Ha... Love your Crocus!!!!

Congrats on the win.
Hugs,
Betsy

Hi Darla, Thank you for visiting me today. I wish I were able to participate in the Backyard Bird Count this year, but we'll be too much away from home. I've enjoyed your photos... wonder if you're getting snow already? :-)

I would probably be doing a happy dance if snow were to come out way ;^) I love the little buds on your Candytuft - they contrast so well with the dark green foliage. Please be sure to post photos if you receive any snow...

Wow Darla, I see on our local weather that those south of us are going to get a wallop of snow, from New Orleans all the way over to you guys! Insanity, that's what it is! Do stay safe and stock up on everything so you won't have to get out in it. I assume that most people in your area do not have experience driving in snow!

First I have to say what great pictures you are taking with your new camera!! All those pretty flowers blooming and now snow? Weather really is crazy this year.
The sky picture is beautiful. It reminds me of the sand that is raked in Japanese gardens.

If you want to see snow, come on up north..to the Nation's Capital, Northern Va. Suburban Md. and Baltimore area. We are all snowed all! Think Spring!

Snow in Florida?? That is just not right! Oh and I loved your comment about Granny! Granny on t.v.!! Wow.

My Mom lives in Florida and she told me that snow was coming in the northern part of the state... jeez there's no escaping it.

Hi Darla~~ I thought you were UPSET about the possibility of snow. Well now my fingers are crossed for its arrival. Hopefully it won't be too cold for your blooming darlings. The creeping phlox... PINK!! :)

Pretty blooms Darla. Yes, I'm about 30 miles north of Atlanta and there is talk of snow here today. I know for your area, this should be an interesting day. Keep us posted! Happy Valentine's Day.

Cool sky! Perfect picture showing what is commonly called a mackerel sky. It will be fun for you to get snow. Fingers crossed:)

I love that header shot, it's gorgeous!

Snow in Florida?! That would be something, wouldn't it? Hopefully it will insulate your beautiful early bloomers.

I think you're looking at a Common Grackle. Rusties are in their winter plumage at the moment and would be more brown. Also the bill is large like a grackle (too large to be a rusty), the legs are thick like a grackle (too thick to be Rusty), and the tail is too long for a Rusty (I work with both species) - Cheers

Kerri said...

Your black bird is a grackle. Do you see the lovely purple and green irridescent colors in its plumage when the sun catches it?
They arrive here in the early spring with the cowbirds and red winged blackbirds.
I enjoyed the GBBC too but we were away visiting our son and family some of the time, so only got to count part of Friday and Sunday, and on and off all day Monday. Wish it didn't always fall on our youngest grandson's birthday weekend! I'd like to have time to count in other locations. There were NO birds in our son's backyard! Their squirrels eat any bird seed they put out.
