Weekend...Facts About Poison Ivy, Sumac & Oak..

The only purple Crocus to bloom so far this year.Yep, went and got me a good case of poison....blistered red arms, swollen eyes, generally miserable. Phoning the Dr. today for a shot....it's not good to have it around your eyes. Next two photos, the new area we are working on and where I got into the poison.
We already have quite a bit coming up out here, this was my pull and toss area. It should be interesting this year.
The little area between the trees to the right, we planted 30 white Caladium bulbs and where the poison vines are.
Miniature/Dwarf Azalea

The oil is called urushiol of the poison ivy, sumac and oak. 1/4 ounce of urushiol is all that's needed to cause a rash in every person on earth.
500 people could itch from the amount covering the head of a pin.
1 - 5 years is normal for urushiol oil to stay active on ANY surface including dead/dormant plants...
This Snapdragon has been here for 16 months
If you come in contact with the oil of these poison vines, the oil will remain on your dirty laundry in your dirty clothes hamper until it's washed. Leaving you vulnerable to contact with the oil when you sort your laundry. Put clothes directly in the washing machine.
One of the resuced Snaps...I was pulling and cutting big brown hairy vines off the trees and the runners that grow just beneath the soils surface. In my mind I was thinking, I bet this is posion. See, Virginia Creeper also grows in and with poison. And I know I see it growing on these trees every year. It has 5 leaves per cluster where Poison Ivy and Oak have 3 per cluster .... Sumac 7 to 13 on a branch...with the vines dormant....well no leaves to count or observe.
Love how this Daff is resting on the Dianthus bloom.
I usually get into some poison every year. It gets worse with every contact. It's been about three years since I've had to have a shot to clear it up though.

Your daffodils and dianthus are so pretty together! I'm SO GLAD that it's almost spring!

For some reason I get it now all the time in the summer. I, too have to get a shot. I can't hardly go out without getting it. I think it blows in the wind. I hope you feel better soon. And thanks for answering my question about the tulip tree.

I hope you feel better soon. What a hazard to have it in your garden. My sister has poison oak in her garden. She's had some bad encounters with it. You flowers are sure looking happy though.

Girl you be careful with that poison ivy. Love the pics. Snaps are amazing along with dianthus. I have some dianthus blooming that has been there for a couple of years.

Have a great day my friend!

Oh Darla that is just awful. My daughter is extremely allergic to it and one year when she got into some poison sumac, it was so bad that her eyes swelled shut. I hope you feel better soon!

I pray that this clear up soon.It doesn't sound like fun.The flowers are beautiful.

Hope it clears up soon, but I know it takes a while, since I've had it plenty too. My son once got it all over his legs while out weed-whacking in shorts. It itches something horrible, and nothing over the counter seems to help.

Be careful out there next time!

Oh my goodness Darla! Hope you heal up soon. I never knew all those facts about poison ivy. Potent stuff. The area you were working in looks great though if that's any consolation.

Oh you poor thing. You must be just miserable. I am lucky that I never get poisoned by ivy. I can pull it out bare handed. When I was a kid someone told me if I ate some of the ivy I would never get it, so I did. I think I am just thankful I am immune to it or I would have been in bad shape.

So sorry to hear you have to go through this. My Mom and a sister have both been hospitalized after burning poison ivy and breathing it in. Its so common in such a wide range it's any wonder so many people are exposed to it. Do take care.

Darla: Sorry to hear the poison ivy attack. Wish you can feel better soon. The new area looks nice, and I can imagine how beautiful that area will be with 30 white caladiums growing up. Just make sure those poison ivy are completely removed, and be extremely careful to work around that area!

Wonderful post...beautiful and informative! I can't go near poison oak without getting it!

Thanks for your sweet comment on my 25th anniversary post.

Oh, no. You have a BAD case of it. I've already had rash behind my knees and in the bend of my elbow. I think the dog brings it to me. I've found plain old Calamine Lotion does me about as good as anything as long as it isn't widespread. You need bigger guns to fight swollen eyes and bad blistering.

I hope the shot does the trick and soon.

Well no one can question your commitment to gardening, Darla Dear! I'm so sorry you got beat up by that horrid oil. I hope the steroid shot works. If it's any consolation, the area looks great. Well worth your efforts. :) Love the Daff on the Di too.

Interesting facts on the poison ivy oil that I didn't know. I seem to get it every year now (until a few years ago, I never got it). Thankfully, I've never had to have a shot. Take care of your eyes! I hope the shot works quickly on you and your misery is soon relieved.

Ooh, Darla, not a good situation. Just a few minutes ago my neighbor was telling me she went to the doctor today with a maddening itch. She had no idea what she touched or if it was in the air. I've only had it once, thankfully, and hope never again! Get better real soon. Remember to wear gloves and long sleeves and don't touch your eyes! Great post with a lot of timely information. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear that you came down with a case of poison. I hope the shot works. I usually only have to look at poison ivy or sumac before I break out.
I really like the picture of your daffodils and dianthus.

OMG! You poor thing! I sure hope the shot works quickly, you must be miserable. Your flowers are so cheerful.

Wow Darla,
That is terrible-I do hope that shot makes you better fast-That's just crazy scary!

I've never in my life have come in contact with either of those and I'm in the mountains all the time.

Do feel better fast friend~♥

Yikes, that sounds miserable! I had no idea how little it took or how long the poison stuck around. We have nettles and poison ivy here, luckily it's usually in more wooded areas. Hope you feel better soon!

My son had a bat case of this 2 years ago...all over his arms and legs...got into it while camping. I felt so badly for him, and now, you, Darla! Sure hope your injection works instantly and you are relieved!!!

I feel for you. Poison ivy is bad. I used to get it all the time and even now occasionally but had to educate myself too. I hate it that poison ivy wants to grow in the garden-and it grows quite well there too. Yikes! I haven't had any here yet but the ticks are out-early too if you ask me. Get well soon. I think that shot will help.

Oh no, Darla! I am so sorry...it's a nasty rash. I've tried all the urushiol removal remedies and now try to wear long sleeves and gloves all the time. Guess what? Mango has a similar urushiol oil and I am now allergic to it! be careful! gail

Wow, I'm sorry you got it! I know it can be a major pain. Fortunately I've never had it, I think I'm one of the lucky ones who is resistant to it but I still avoid it like the plague! I hope you're feeling better!

I am so thrilled with your snapdragon! My first ones in the garden will be placed in a dryer spot them I had planned thanks to your info!

Ouch, your poison ivy sounds horrible! We have that stuff all in our woods and at one time in areas where we garden. We have taken many risks with it to rid those areas of the itchy stuff and so far, no issues for us. We must not be too allergic to it and we are very careful around it. We have touched it with gloves on but are careful to wash the gloves, clothes with hot water. I have a brother that cannot get close to it or he will have a reaction. Even though we have never had a reaction to it, we are still very careful around it…

I hope you heal soon…

Oh man, I hate to hear this. Poison anything on your skin is aweful. I feel for you and the pain you must feel. We get a lot of Stinging Nettle with the same type of results when it touches you. I pray you get better soon. I'm sure you wear gloves and long sleeves...but your poor eyes. Do take care. Hope you are feeling fit as a fiddle very soon.

Darla I'm sorry you got such a bad case. I'm really sensitive to it too and it's miserable.

Usually you have 10-15 minutes after coming into contact with the oil to avoid a reaction. Even plain water works to get it off if you can't get to soap. Another thing to know is that open air and sunlight breaks down the oil pretty quickly. So if you get it on something like leather shoes, set them out in the sun for a day. Less chance of getting the oil on you than if you tried to clean them yourself.

We have poison ivy everywhere here and the above are a couple of tricks I've learned to live with it.
