GBBD and Fertilizer Friday..

I believe this is the least amount of blooms I have ever had in January.. 9 or 10 consecutive days of below freezing temperature makes a big difference in the garden. Today High 71--heavy rains on the way.
The last of the Gomphrenas--guess these are seed?
Pansy
This Pansy is keeping her bonnet around her little face.
Most of my Snapdragons are holding on. It sure it taking the ones I started from seed a long time to bloom.
Of course this Walking Iris is not in bloom. Just wanted to show the frost damage, see the white blades?
Alyssum is trying to hold on.
Lobelia and Petunias have been kept on the front porch under a sheet,
and still they look sad.
The two Poinsettias that I had planted in the garden and kept alive for over a year are severely frost bitten. I am leaving them w/o pruning to see what happens come Spring. In the meantime I have a beautiful Poinsettia in the house.
Come Spring it will be planted in a large container and 'placed' in the garden. If Jack Frost decides to visit next winter I can bring it in.
Thank you Carol over at http://maydreamsgardens.blogspot.com/ for hosting the monthly GBBD. Thank you Tootsie over at http://tootsietime.blogspot.com/ for hosting the weekly Fertilizer Friday.
Thanks for the help on IDing the birds yesterday. We have only seen the Goldfinches in the winter here.
Today I am thankful for a healthy family.

Hi Darla, we are very pleased to see your beautiful flowers were spared for the most part. I do hope they return to robust health soon. The gomphrena seeds will look like little shiny black balls within those dried petals, I think. Sprinkle them around for babies, I think again. Happy bloom day! :-)

Wonderful blooms! And it's a shame about the frozen walking iris. Before you know it'll be blooming big.

Darla,

I love the color of your snapdragon and how I adore pansies...I have absolutely zero blooming in my garden ..makes me sad. Happy FF. Sonia

Darla: What a great amount of flowers you still have, they are doing pretty well with all your cold weather.

Actually I heard on channel 6 this morning that we set a new record of 14 consecutive days of below freezing temps! The old record was 13 and it was set in 1966. I'm glad to be warming up now even if it does mean rain.

It's been a brutal winter for sure Darla! Thanks for sharing the lovelies that survived the deep freeze...have a good day! gail

I'm glad Jack Frost left you with these blooms. I really appreciated seeing your pansies. Ours look very pathetic. I imagine they'll snap back, but it's going to take a while.

Hi;
I'm so glad to see that your flowers have held up during this crazy weather pattern. I know Pansies are tough but I'd be so sad if you lost an in the garden Poinsettia to this awful deep freeze! Thanks for stopping over and commenting on my blogs. Very cheery pictures!

I love Gomphrenas because they are so faithful to reseed. Thank you for sharing.

It is so good to see your flowers blooming. Gorgeous pansies. The extreme cold for so many days in a row will have some effects on the many plants that normally survive the winter. But it's still going to be a great spring.

Darla...you're doing better than I am. I don't think I have any blooms left...even the fashion azaleas blooms froze. I just bought 2 petunia plants to give an outside container a little life.

Ah, the Flower Queen has some wonderful wintry flowers.

(which flower will you choose for being B/W Darla.lol.)

I heard about the unusually cold weather, but it looks like quite a bit survived, and did so beautifully. Happy bloom day.

Any blooms at all are welcome this cold winter. Yours are still trying to hang on and they will snap out of it. Your pansies are just beautiful Darla. Hopefully there will be no more cold spells for you.

Your pansies are beautiful... looks like the birds are enjoying the weather.

Don't ya just love Pansies?! They sure hang in there. Spring will be here soon and everything will burst forth again...can't wait!
I LOVE goldfinches!!

Darla,
Those pansies are colorful and bright in the midst of the brown... they do their best in our winter weather and won't last here into spring. We are keeping our chins up right? Much to be thankful for. (loved your birdie pics too... I'm always happy to see the goldfinches back at the feeders... haven't been able to photo them yet though.)

Hi Darla, good to see your bright flowers. I have nothing bright in my gardens except the big red bow I put on one of the bird feeders. But it won't be long. The water in the fish pond has thawed out and I will get to check on my koi and gold fish. They have survived over 10 years. The water is deep enough for them to go down and not freeze. Blessings

I absolutely love Violas and Alyssum during the winter months. Mine are hanging in there. Yours are beautiful :^)

Your flowers look wonderful to me but I suppose not to you since you aren't use to them getting frozen. My Poinsettia in the house looks like crap. I just don't do well with plants in the house anymore. Sure hope my Amaryllis does better - it's ready to open soon.

Darla, I'm so glad to see all these blooms in your garden! Even though they may look a little "sad," they look as though they will survive. Gorgeous poinsettias! I can't even keep them alive indoors:)

Wow -you have lot of great stuff going on! Serious zone envy :)

Lovely blooms! I have one lone snapdragon seeded from last year's bed and somehow survived our blast-furnace summer. No blooms yet.

Thanks for stopping by Hill Country Mysteries. I'm tickled to be finding so many great garden blogs.

Wow--for such sustained cold weather, you've got lots of beautiful blooms!

Betsy Banks Adams said...

I'll bet most all of your plants will come back, Darla. Plants are pretty resilient. We may have lost our pansies --due to our frigid temperatures here last week. They look pretty pitiful right now.. BUT--they may just come back.. We shall see...

Hugs,
Betsy

Hi Darla. I'm sorry to hear about your Poinsettias. Mine are planted outside in permanent locations since we never get frost. I hope things will warm up for you soon.

Rosie Nixon Fluerty said...

Darla I am amazed that you have a poinsettia growing outside - I am sure it did not like those cold days you've had. I love pansies too and once the weather improves a little more I am heading to the garden centre to pick some with "nice little faces"

Sorry about the cold temps! At least here in the Chicago area we expect it. I can imagine what a challenge it must be when you're growing plants that just aren't equipped to handle such chilly weather.

A great Bloom Day from our perspective. I got nothin' except my amaryllis. Simply beautiful.~~Dee

Glad to see that most of the flowers have made it through your inclement weather.

Unusual, and here we are having your weather, with snowdrops blooming.

Things will turn around again, and be back to normal.

Well at least you still have quite a few blooms! I know it's a shock to you to have so much freezing weather but I'm thinking your plants will make it (though maybe a little held back).

I'm sorry you have had such cold temps. I hope a warm up has started. Yes, the pansies, snaps and such can handle the cooler temps, which causes me to look forward to my first pansies of the season, the end of February or first part of March.

Country Mouse said...

Lovely - I love pansies. I've heard that poinsettias grow into shrubs around here but I'm afraid to try in case it's too successful!

Jayne said...

This winter has been tough on Southern gardens because we're just not prepared for a freeze. I'm glad you had some blooms to share with us though Darla. Pansies are such little troopers aren't they?

Your blooms hold their beauty still.

your flowers that you do have to share are just wonderful!
Love ya lady bug...I am sending out a package your way on Monday!!!
thanks for joining in this week with me!

Hi Darla,
Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful blooms. We won't see anything like that until probably late April, here in PA. It has been at least in the 30's here. that is better than the teens and single digits.

Have a blessed weekend.

Hi Darla...
I do hope the frost as not done to much damage... all our snow as now gone and we too have had rain and are expecting even more...
I have been thinking of you and your friends..

I'll catch up with you on Wednesday for our Header fun... but in the mean time you keep a smile on your face.

You still have a lot of pretty blooms! The only thing I have left that looks interesting right now...is the sedum. :) How do you keep your poinsettia looking so healthy? Mine barely make it through Christmas... -Amy

Hi Darla~~ Well, 71 degrees must mean the cold weather has passed. LOL How nice it must feel. If you end up losing a few plants you'll have a good excuse to go plant shopping.
