Veggie Victory!

Most of you know that our success with vegetable gardening has not been too good the last few years. This year we are feeling a bit better about it. Yesterday we pulled carrots. My husband picked squash and peas while the girls and I were at church.
Sweet Banana Peppers
Tomatoes, maybe Better Boy
Tomatoes, don't remember their name.
Cherry Tomatoes

We have been eating fresh lettuce for a couple of months now. I have a container garden on the back deck while my husband has a garden in the ground out back. It's such a satisfying feeling to pick, wash, cook and serve veggies from your own garden.

**Now, would someone tell me how to SUCCESSFULLY grow onions????

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today I am Thankful to see the fruits of our labor.
That is AWESOME Darla!! Nothing better than fresh veggies from the garden.
I wish I could give you some tips on the onions, but they've never grown well for me.
Ooh so jealous of all that yummy stuff you have harvested! Especially the squash, can't wait for mine to start producing. I planted a variety that looks just like yours. ;)
It's not fair. You already have squash? Mine have three leaves. The rain will make them jump now.
As for your brug, it sounds like rust. It's a fungus. You can remove the leaves that have it on them. If it comes back, you'll need a fungicide. Immunox is a good one. Spectracide makes it. You can get it at Lowe's. Just make sure you spray it early one morning when it's not going to rain.
THAT is quite a haul in May no less!
I love squash...my Mom usually grows a few plants in containers and gets enough to feed her for the summer...she wasn't able to this year...
Nice haul!!! Purdy too! It is such fun to grow food. I found a little eggplant formed on one of my plants this morning...everything is so exciting! Are your big tomatoes with wrinkles called UGLY RIPES??? They look like them. I have never grown an onion but would like to also!
How nice to see all these veggies Darla. That is some beautiful squash you have there.
Last night I fixed snow peas from my garden. Yummy!
I'm always amazed to see how productive Florida gardens are so early in the year. We are just planting and you are already harvesting.
Great haul! Veggies from the garden are so much better than what you can buy at most grocery stores.
Whoa! Already you are harvesting! What awesome bounties you have there, Darla.
Have a fabulous week.
Great job, I know how hard it is to get those veggies before every bug, and animal gets to them.
Kind of hard to wrap our heads around you harvesting fresh veggies, when most of ours have not been planted yet.
I am so happy for you that your veggie garden is going so well. That is just the best feeling to eat what you've grown. Just for myself this year I couldn't see doing it for no more than what I eat. Those squash look so yummy - cooked with some green onions and butter. Makes my mouth water. Have a good day Darla.
You are pulling up vegetables and taking pictures of fully formed tomatoes and most folks here have not planted seeds yet and certainly none have set out plants. It is either too cold or too wet or too discouraging.
The veggies are looking good, and I am sure tasting good. I will be glad when Jimmy is back home so we can go back to have a veggie garden.
Darla - BEYOND BEYOND AWESOME!!! I'm giddy for you. GREAT harvest!!! I've never grown onions since we don't eat them, but I've had good luck with leeks.
Darla,
YAY! Everything looks so yummy. You have to be very happy about these successes. I'm sitting here (alone~heavenly) eating a dinner of fresh stir fry from the garden ... nothing better!
Congrats and hugs for a job well done!
I'm still working on the onions. I have some growing from seed and some from onion sets. The ones from onion sets look really good. The ones from seed look better than any other year but not sure how successful they'll be. I'll let you know how it turns out.
For a person who sucks at vegetables like me, you seem to do great! Awesome harvest there, Darla!
Great harvest Darla. It looks delicious. Now I can't grow squash for nothing. I have 1 plant {can't remember which as I planted more than one that day} that is blooming. I've planted 3 times. Give up.
I have onion sets looking good. I also have Egyptian {walking} onions. I could send you some if you want. They are easy & they do multiply.
I agree whole heartedly! To grow and pick your own food ... great feeling! Onions... maybe good drainage but not expert enough to give advice. Your harvest looks yummy!
Congrats Darla.. I would love to have fresh veggies from my own garden. We have only grown some tomatoes here. Veggie gardens are not allowed in our yards. The community club provided off -site places to have a garden. BUT--we are too busy with our flowers.
You will really enjoy all of your fresh veggies.
Hugs,
Betsy
How awesome to already have that much growing now!! Carrots are something we've had trouble with. The one year they grew the dog pulled them all up and ate them.
I tried onions last year with no luck at all.
Those tomatoes look so good, we haven't even planted ours yet! I wish I lived somewhere warmer and had a longer season...
I'm so jealous! We won't have anything like that in Iowa till at least the 4th of July!
Yay!!!
Persistence pays off!!
I only grow green onions. They like cool weather and LOTS of water.
Good luck!1
That's a nice harvest! I have rabbits eating my peas down, so I probably won't get much if any of a harvest.
I plant my onions when the temps are cool, around the end of March. I have found onion plants work best for me. I am guessing you would probably plant yours in February. I always have to look up how far apart to plant them. They like to be kept watered and weeded. When the stems start to dry out, you stop watering them. They can be used at any size. If they start to bloom, you should use them as soon as possible, because you won't be able to store those. Did I give you more info than you were looking for? LOL I'm not sure if any of it pertains to your zone, though.
